The quality of a fur cannot be read on a label; it lies in the sum of its details. Some can be seen, others are felt with the hands.

The pile

The pile should look even, lustrous and full, with no thin patches. Press it lightly and it should spring straight back.

Leather and seams

When the garment moves, the leather should feel supple and make no sound. From the outside, the joins between pelts should not be noticeable, and the pattern of the pelts should follow the line of the design in an orderly way.

Fit and fall

A good piece hangs straight and symmetrically, and the collar stays in place in movement. The sleeves are the same length and the front closes without pulling.

Lining and finish

Look at how the lining is attached, how regular the inner stitching is and how solid the hooks, buttons and zips are. These are the first points to wear and they reveal the care of the making.

What a photograph cannot tell you

No image can establish with certainty the authenticity, species or origin of a fur. That is why it matters to see the piece in person and to ask the seller for all available information and documentation.
